In the explanation you never thought you needed, Nicole Kidman has now revealed why she became one of the key talking points of the 2017 Oscars with that clapping technique.

Speaking to radio hosts Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O on Thursday, Kidman put it down to a ring she was wearing on the night that didn't belong to her and she didn't want to damage.

"It was really awkward and I was like, 'gosh I want to clap, I don't want to not be clapping,' which would have been the worst," she said.

"Therefore I'm clapping but it was really difficult because I had a huge ring on that was not my own but was absolutely gorgeous and I was terrified of damaging it."

The moment from the Academy Awards show went viral after Twitter exploded with commentary suggesting the Lion actress learn to clap while others just generally enjoyed deciphering this new-look applause and making it into new online memes.
