Let's face it, social media was made for oversharing. Now, Facebook Messenger wants you to share even more about your day with your friends with a new feature on its app. It's called "Messenger Day" and it's looking very similar to it's younger, hipper rival Snapchat.
The Messenger app allows you to take photos within the app, add cutsy filters, stickers and texts, and then share it to 'My Day' for your friends to view. It stays there for only 24 hours before vanishing -- much like Snapchat stories.
Facebook wants you to be messaging about your day as you live it, much like Instagram Stories and Snapchat.
What's the point of all of this? Audience growth. On the down side, the new feature has copped criticism for blurring the lines between private and public communication on an app that was initially designed for private group or one-on-one messaging. Plus, all of the social media platforms are becoming even more alike by the second.
As a side note, Snapchat has taken a hit since another similar feature, Instagram Stories, rolled out last year. Looking at the number of daily users on the platform, Snapchat's growth slowed down significantly in the second half of last year. The turning point lines up with the release of Instagram Stories. Will they be able to cope with another imitation?
With 1.23 billion daily active users around the globe, Facebook remains the all-conquering social media behemoth.
