American singer Macklemore has released a powerful new music video that shines light on the struggles of individuals who are over-prescribed medicines by doctors and experience withdrawal symptoms.

The 33-year-old artist, real name Benjamin Haggerty, teamed up with fellow American singer Ariana DeBoo for the 'Drug Dealer' video which shows him battling through the different stages of a withdrawal episode.

The lyrics to the song are critical of doctors in the United States linked to pharmaceutical companies and suggest they are partly responsible for deaths of celebrities such as Prince, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston.

"They said it wasn't a gateway drug, my homie was takin' subs and he ain't wake up," Haggerty sings.

"The whole while, these billionaires, they kicked up, paying out congress so we take their drugs, murderers who will never face the judge."

"I could've been gone, out 30's, faded in that tub. That's Prince, Michael and Whitney, that's Amy, Ledger and Pimp C,"Macklemore, 'Drug Dealer

The Jason Koenig–directed clip sees Haggerty crouched in a shower before twisting and turning on a bare mattress in a room littered with drugs and paraphernalia. DeBoo also features in the video while covered in red-and-white pills.

Fans of the singer took to social media to express their satisfaction with the song and the strong message it conveys about drug addiction.
