Police are investigating the deaths of a woman and a young child in Sydney after their bodies were found in a unit on Monday.

NSW Police confirmed in a statement that emergency services were called to the unit in Hillsdale in Sydney's east around 1.20pm after receiving a concern for welfare report and found the bodies of the woman and child inside.

Superintendent Leanne McCusker from the Botany Bay Local Area Command confirmed the woman is known to police but authorities are yet to formally identify the pair and have established a crime scene.

In a press conference, McCusker also said a gas source within the unit building, which was later turned off, was not linked to the incident.

Homicide detectives and a forensics team are investigating the area and authorities have urged local residents and neighbours to contact Crimestoppers with any information that could assist the investigation.
