Former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard will take over from Jeff Kennett as the chair of leading mental health organisation beyondblue, it was announced Tuesday.
Gillard will take up the position on July 1, when founder Kennett departs the post.
"beyondblue is part of my DNA," Kennett said. "I'll miss it, but I'll miss it less knowing that in Julia's hands the organisation will go from strength to strength."
Gillard first joined the board of beyondblue as a director in late 2014.
"Julia Gillard's influence as a former leader of this country, her warmth and her commitment to the cause make her the ideal person to lead beyondblue," Kennett added in a statement.
Beyondblue is one of Australia's leading information and support services for people dealing with depression, anxiety and other mental health issues.
Founded in 2000 by Kennett, it's a not-for-profit organisation that has helped to significantly destigmatise mental illness, raise awareness for sufferers and educate young Australians.
Kennett's departure comes as the former Victorian premier was involved in a public stoush with Amber Harrison, the former lover of Channel Seven CEO Tim Worner. Harrison engaged in a Twitter dispute with Kennett, a director of Seven West Media, during a high-profile legal dispute between Harrison and her former employer.
