The 51-year-old was last seen on Sunday morning.

The hunt continues for Barry Dettman who escaped from a minimum security prison in Victoria's west on Saturday night.

The 51-year-old sex attacker was reportedly jailed for indecent acts in front of a child and was less than a month away from being released, The Age reports.

It is unclear how Dettman escaped from the minimum-security prison in Trawalla, however Detective Senior Sergeant Phyland said he was sighted near the prison on Sunday morning.

"When the [prisoner] count was done this morning he wasn't present and the search has begun from there," Phyland said.

"We are appealing for members of the public who may know about Mr Dettman's whereabouts to contact triple zero and inform police."

Dettman was last seen walking along the Western Highway on Sunday morning towards Melbourne in green track pants and a flannelette shirt.

Police do not believe that he is armed, but have warned people not to approach him.
