University students could soon be hit with higher fees in a funding overhaul of the Abbott Government's higher education package to be included in the federal budget.
NewsCorp Australia reports the broad strokes of the new funding formula which could see student fees surge by at least 25 per cent.

The plan will reportedly be unveiled by the coalition to university vice chancellors on Monday.
The proposal is said to lift the amount of cost borne by university students from the current 40 per cent and will mandate repayments of higher education loans earlier than at present.
NewsCorp also reports that students will be charged a loan fee at the commencement of their studies.
The government will reportedly justify the revamp by pointing to graduates gaining a significant private benefit in the form of higher incomes after they finish their studies.
