The protest occurred over the weekend, with thousands gathering to march through the streets to protest and celebrate marijuana culture.

This marks MardiGrass festival's 25th year, with the event strengthening in numbers and coverage every year.

Justice Party Senator Derryn Hinch was on several panels discussing the medicinal use of of marijuana.

The theme this year was 'Overgrow the Government'.

The three day festival has a variety of guest speakers, as well as a parade and dances by 'Ganja Faeries'.

There was a strong police presence in the area.

The police decided not participate in the annual 'Tug O' Drug War' with festival go-ers this year. The MardiGrass website said they do not blame them as "it is a bit embarrassing to keep losing to the stoners".
