Rugby league superstar Greg Inglis has checked himself into a mental health rehabilitation centre to be treated for depression.
Inglis's club, South Sydney, confirmed the news in a statement on Wednesday evening. The 30-year-old is currently sidelined with a serious knee injury.
"Inglis entered the facility last week and will be undergoing a series of programs and treatments to assist with his mental health," the Rabbitohs said in a statement.
"The Rabbitohs, Greg and his management will not be making any further comment at this stage, and we ask the media to respect the privacy of both Greg and his family at this time."
The announcement has been met with overwhelming support from the rugby league and mental health communities.
Lifeline CEO Pete Shmigel tweeted on Thursday: "Good on you @GregInglisNRL. All best from @LifelineAust."
Former Broncos star and close friend of Inglis, Justin Hodges, told The Courier Mail his ex-State of Origin teammate felt "lost".
"I won't go into exact details but it's a bit of everything. He feels lost," Hodges told the paper.
"It's a bit of footy, it's his injury and some personal stuff."
