Tom Cruise Confirmed 'Top Gun 2' Could Start Filming Within A Next Year

Speaking to the hosts of "Sunrise", Tom Cruise confirmed that a "Top Gun" sequel could start filming as early as next year. Rumours of the sequel have been floating around as far back as 2010, so here's what we know so far.

When Tony Scott, the director of "Top Gun", took his life in 2012 many believed the sequel had been abandoned, but in the last year more and more information has been released relating to the production.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has been pretty vocal about confirming that the project has been on the cards, posting a tweet in January 2016 of him and Cruise "discussing a little Top Gun 2".

When he was asked about the casting, Bruckheimer told "Entertainment Tonight", "Yeah of course, you don't make 'Top Gun' without Tom Cruise!"

Val Kilmer also confirmed he'd be jumping back in the cockpit -- a little too keenly in fact -- posting to Facebook an announcement, then backtracking the next day.

Kilmer's involvement has since been confirmed, in a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything), the actor was asked if he was involved and he replied with a resounding "Hell yes".

And as far as returning to the "Danger Zone"? Kenny Loggins spoke to "Daily News" saying Cruise promised him the iconic tune would return in the sequel. He also spoke about how keen he was for a walk-on role. Nice try, Kenny.

In 2014, Bruckheimer revealed to HuffPost that the plot of the film would most likely revolve around Cruise's Maverick facing off against drones.

"The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones," Bruckheimer said, "Cruise is going to show them that they're not obsolete. They're here to stay."

Currently, no director has been announced as attached to the film.

The original "Top Gun" was released in 1986, more than 30 years ago, so instead of a super sexy beach volleyball sequence we might see the cast limbering up for a high-octane night of bingo and an early dinner.
