Aussies Can't Get Enough of Drake and Bieber, Spotify Data Reveals

For their fifth birthday, the music streaming site gave us the stats.

Spotify is celebrating its fifth birthday in Australia, and to mark the occasion they released a ton of info about what Aussies have been listening to, and how our music tastes have changed in the last five years.

Since 2012, Aussies have listened to eight million years worth of music which, when you think about it, is a LOT of Nickelback.

Also, according to Spotify, Canberra has the highest ratio of plays to users making it the most musical location in the country, followed closely by North Sydney and Surry Hills.

Aussies also can't get enough of Drake, who not only ranks as the top streamed artist of all time, but his 2016 release "One Dance" was Australia's most streamed track of the last five years.

Spotify's most streamed album title slipped out of Drake's grasp, with Justin Bieber's 2015 album "Purpose" taking the number one spot. Also FOUR of Biebs' tracks made it to the top ten most streamed list. Other artists making it to the top 10 most streamed list more than once are Major Lazer ("Lean On" and "Cold Water" which features Bieber) and our very own Flume ("Never Be Like You" and "Say It").

Spotify also includes a list of genres that, from 2012 until now, have totally dropped in popularity. Possibly the most shocking part about this data is that these genres are real, and aren't just words pulled out of a hat.

  1. Alternative Pop
  2. Math Rock
  3. Gothic Metal
  4. Gbvfi
  5. E6Fi
  6. Deep Chiptune
  7. Symphonic Metal
  8. Post-Doom Metal
  9. Vancouver Indie
  10. Popgaze

Why isn't anyone listening to Math Rock anymore!?!? Was it dividing the nation??? Get it? Math puns! But seriously, half of those "genres" look like someone typed them with their elbow. And when are we as a society ever truly "post-doom"?

Here are the other top ten streamed artists, tracks and albums of Spotify's five years in Australia.
