"Wonder Woman" currently holds the record for highest Rotten Tomatoes score of any live-action superhero movie with a whopping score of 97 percent, and that's a BIG DEAL!
Let's look at the facts, listing the current Rotten Tomatoes percentage for each film as of today. These percentage scores are calculated by the percentage of professional critic reviews that are positive for the film.
Despite the fact that it feels like every third movie released is a superhero film of some sort, "Wonder Woman" is the first solo female-led superhero film in 12 years, with Marvel's "Elektra" (10 percent) released in 2005 and DC's "Catwoman" (9 percent) released in 2004.
Since then, female-led super flicks were basically a no-go zone, with major studios focusing on less-known stories like Batman's origin story with Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins" (84 percent), or Spider-Man's origin story with "The Amazing Spider-Man" (72 percent), or how about the "Iron Man" origin story (94 percent).
Once Marvel got on a winning streak with the whole origin story model we saw "Thor" (77 percent) and "Captain America: The First Avenger" (80 percent) join the club. And who could forget 2003's "The Hulk" (61 percent) or 2008's "The Incredible Hulk" (67 percent)? We tried to forget, but we can't. Then they brought the gang together for "The Avengers" (92 percent), "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (75 percent) and "Captain America: Civil War" (90 percent).
Women were noticeably absent from the frontlines of these superhero films, with Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow character always regaled to that fun friend who shows up for a cameo. But while there were campaigns to get Marvel to make a Black Widow film, they instead went into a new and exciting direction, releasing origin stories for "Ant-Man" (81 percent) and "Doctor Strange" (90 percent).
Meanwhile, the DC films struggled to keep up after Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" (94 percent) and "Dark Knight Rises" (87 percent). They released "Man of Steel" (55 percent), "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" (28 percent) and "Suicide Squad" (25 percent). Things just weren't looking great.
That is, until Princess Diana of Themyscira bolted onto the scene. After a brief role in "Batman v Superman", Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman was given the green light to punch her way onto big screens in her solo film. The weight of that rested heavy on her and the film director Patty Jenkins' shoulders heavily. If the film was a flop, DC films would cement their losing streak after their last critical failures.
Early reactions of "Wonder Woman" were good, and they keep getting better, with audiences defying the predictions that people don't want to see female superheros on the big screen.
Currently, Marvel has one female-led film on their slate with "Captain Marvel", and DC have a lady-centric "Suicide Squad" follow-up with "Gotham Sirens".
While it's still early days, with the film set to release in cinemas on July 1, there is a potential that more reviews could break bringing the score down. But for now, we can revel in the fact that Wonder Woman just kicked every other superhero's ass.
