A former MMA fighter convicted of the 2014 assault of his ex-girlfriend was sentenced Monday to life in prison.
War Machine, who legally changed his name from Jon Koppenhaver, was given the possibility of parole after 36 years, when he will be 71 years old, according to the New York Post.
Some of the crimes War Machine was found guilty of included first-degree kidnapping with use of a deadly weapon resulting in substantial bodily harm and sexual assault with use of a deadly weapon resulting in substantial bodily harm, according to Las Vegas’ KSNV-TV.
Mackinday, better known as porn star Christy Mack, told HuffPost after the attack that War Machine broke 18 bones around her eyes, broke her nose in two places and knocked out her teeth.
She also said he sawed off clumps of her hair with a dull knife.
“He has beaten me many times before, but never this badly,” she said. “He took my phone and canceled all of my plans for the following week to make sure no one would worry about my whereabouts.” She said he also threatened to rape her.
Mackinday appeared at the sentencing Monday, asking for the maximum sentence.
“I do know that when he gets out he will kill me,” she said, according to TMZ.
War Machine told the court he regrets the attack.
“There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t seriously regret all of the things that I did,” he told the court. “I was a very, very lost and very empty person.”
