Australia's First Terrorism Jail To Be Built In Goulburn

A 'mini-max' jail will house radicalised inmates.

A new 'mini-max' jail has been proposed within Goulburn SuperMax in an attempt to combat terrorism.

The new jail, SuperMax II, is expected to house 54 prison inmates, and will include soundproofing facilities, audio and CCTV upgrades in order to improve intelligence gathering.

The new correctional facility is expected to keep extremists from radicalising other prisoners as the number of inmates with terror related offences has more than doubled since 2013.

Gladys Berejiklian, Premier of New South Wales, announced the three year $47 million project as part of the upcoming state budget to take place next week.

"We're a government taking nothing to chance," Berejiklian said in a press conference today.

"We'll be making sure that we continue to have the toughest position in the nation in relation to reducing and eliminating terrorism activity."

The facility proposal follows a deadly terror siege in Melbourne last week that resulted in the death of two men. It also comes after twin terror attacks in London which left seven people dead, including two Australians.

David Elliott, New South Wales Minister for Counter Terrorism and Corrections, said counter-terrorism initiatives are crucial to fight the war against extremists.

"This is a decision that we had to make," Elliott said. "The war on terrorists has another decade or two to go."

"New South Wales will keep that reputation as being one of the best and safest counter-terrorist agencies in the world."
