Donald Trump Speaks Out On Shooting At Congressional Baseball Practice

President Donald Trump delivered a statement Wednesday after a shooting in Virginia that targeted Republican congressmen.

Trump said the shooter had died from his injuries. Law enforcement officials had not confirmed that.

Trump spoke highly of his “very good friend,” House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.), who was shot in the incident and is being treated for his injuries.

“He’s a patriot, and he’s a fighter,” Trump said.

Trump said he had called and expressed his thanks to the Capitol Police and other first responders who reacted to the shooting.

“Everyone on that field is a public servant,” Trump said.

“We will do well in times like these to remember everyone who serves in our nation’s capital is here because, above all, they love our country,” Trump added.

Earlier Wednesday, Trump issued a statement on the shooting, saying he was monitoring the situation.

“The Vice President and I are aware of the shooting incident in Virginia and are monitoring developments closely,” he said in a statement. “We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders, and all others affected.”

Trump also canceled a scheduled event at the Department of Labor, and Vice President Mike Pence canceled a morning speech at the National Association of Homebuilders, White House officials said.

Trump tweeted his support for Scalise earlier Wednesday.

Trump has spoken to several people, including Scalise’s wife and chief of staff, reports Time’s Zeke Miller.

Pence tweeted his condolences as well.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected,” White House press secretary Sean Spicer tweeted shortly after the shooting.

Alexandria Police confirmed a suspect was taken into custody.
