Former Ipswich mayor Paul Pisasale has been arrested on Tuesday after appearing in Brisbane for questioning by the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC).
In a statement released on Tuesday afternoon, the CCC confirmed Pisasale, 65, was transported to the Brisbane City Watchhouse after being detained and was charged with extortion and two counts of sexual assault.
Pisasale remains under processing by the CCC as part of an ongoing investigation.
While being treated for Multiple Sclerosis, Pisasale resigned from his role in Ipswich, west of Brisbane, on June 6 after it was found he had been detained at a Melbourne Airport with $50,000 in cash and his home and office were raided by police.
The arrest comes amid an unfolding investigation into that trip, which is believed to have been for official business.
Pisasale was remanded to stay custody late on Tuesday night and is expected to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
The former mayor was first elected in 1991 before serving four terms in office, including a 2016 election victory where he achieved more than 80 percent of the votes, according to the ABC.
