An uncontained bushfire is threatening homes in far northern Western Australia.

The out-of-control blaze is burning near homes around the Egret community in Kununurra at the eastern extremity of the Kimberley Region.

Emergency WA on Sunday afternoon downgraded the alert for the fire to watch and act -- the second highest possible threat level -- as the blaze passed by the Egret community.

"There is a possible threat to lives and homes as a fire is burning in the area and the conditions are changing," Emergency WA said.

Earlier, the agency said homes in the Egret community were under imminent threat as the fire moved in a westerly direction.

Fire crews were working hard to protect homes in the path of the blaze, the ABC reports.
