Gold Coast Uber Driver Denied Bail Over Rape Charge: Report

A man charged with allegedly raping and assaulting a woman while working as an Uber driver has been refused bail in court.

The alleged perpetrator, who can't be named for legal reasons, is accused of locking his victim in the car then attacking her early on September 23, the Gold Coast Bulletin reports.

On Saturday, the 24-year-old accused was reportedly denied bail at Southport Magistrates Court.

A duty lawyer is said to have told the court that the man denied the allegations against him.

Magistrate Christopher Callaghan said the victim was a vulnerable woman who was "allegedly preyed upon by this young man", according to the Gold Coast Bulletin.

The ABC reports that this is the incident is the fifth sexual assault case against an Uber driver from the south-east Queensland region in recent months.

The driver will next front court on October 10.
