Graphic CCTV footage has emerged of the moment an excavator mowed down a 27-year-old woman in Brisbane, before driving away.

The woman can be seen crossing Hamilton Place at the intersection of Campbell Street at Bowen Hills when the large vehicle makes a left turn and runs her over.

The footage, captured just before 1am on Thursday, shows the excavator briefly stopping further down the street before driving off again.

Another car then comes around the corner and stops after it passes the woman who is lying on the ground.

People also run from the other side of the road to help the woman, before paramedics arrive on the scene.

The 27-year-old woman was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital with critical head injuries.

She underwent emergency surgery but is still fighting for life.

A 58-year-old man is assisting police with its inquiries into the alleged hit-and-run.

Investigators have also appealed for witnesses and those who may have dashcam footage to come forward.

It is believed the excavator may have worked at the nearby railyards.
