Tickets haven't even gone on sale yet, but Sam Smith has declared that a third of the profits from his one-off show at the Sydney Opera House in January will go to the Australian Marriage Equality organisation.

The English pop sensation isn't keeping the rest of the profits for himself: instead, he is handing it over to organisations that help out LGBTQ youth.

The Australian Marriage Equality co-chair Janine Middleton told the Sydney Morning Herald that "Sam knows all too well about the challenges faced by LGBTI Australians and his generosity towards them will help us achieve fairness and equality for all."

"Sam doesn't need to do this, he isn't Australian but he understands what it feels like to be in a relationship that isn't considered equal."

Smith is performing the January concert to promote his new album 'The Thrill of It All', which will be released on November 3. This will be the first time that the singer has travelled to Australia since 2015.

And he isn't the first overseas celebrity to pledge funds in the fight for marriage equality.

In the run-up to his performance at the National Rugby League Grand Final, American rapper Macklemore announced that he would donate the Australian proceeds of his single 'Same Love' to the 'Yes' campaign in the same sex marriage postal survey.

Other massive stars that have added their voice into the mix during the campaign include Jimmy Barnes, Guy Pearce, and Olivia Newton-John.
