New Zealand music star Lorde has given Sydney a stunning Opera House performance -- which was capped off by a cover of Whitney Houston's 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody' in honour of the 'Yes' vote's success.

The singer began the salute with an off-handed comment on the plebiscite.

"Congrats on passing same-sex marriage, by the way!" she said.

Lorde was then given a rainbow flag by a fan, which she draped over her shoulders as she sang an impromptu verse of 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody'.

"I'm very proud of you," the singer said as she finished the tribute.

"You look like you're going to cry!" someone from the crowd responded.

"This is the crying show -- I don't know if you know that," was Lorde's answer.

The New Zealander, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O'Connor, has come a long way since her 2013 debut single 'Royals' topped charts around the world.

Lorde performed almost all of the tracks from her latest album Melodrama on Tuesday night, including big hits 'Liability', 'Homemade Dynamite', 'Perfect Places' and 'The Louvre'.

And 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody' wasn't the only rendition the almost-21-year-old performed: Lorde also sang a new cover of the Hunters & Collectors classic 'Throw Your Arms Around Me'.

The night finished with the first song from the Melodrama record, 'Green Light' -- and some fireworks.

Lorde will perform three more shows to round off her Australia tour.
