This week, the Victorian Legislative Council debates the draconian legislation to have electronic cigarettes regulated as tobacco products, under the Tobacco Amendment Bill 2016. Although well meaning, this legislation is misguided. It will help perpetuate smoking and have an overall negative effect on public health.
Tobacco Treatment Specialist
Dr Colin Mendelsohn is a tobacco treatment specialist with a special interest in electronic cigarettes. He teaches in the Nicotine Dependence and Smoking Cessation course at the University of Sydney and is a member of the committee that develops the Australian national smoking cessation guidelines. Colin is the immediate past Vice President of the Australian Association of Smoking Cessation Professionals.
It is clearly good news that smokers are turning to new and safer options to help them quit or reduce harm from tobacco, often after other treatments have failed repeatedly.
