Dr Nikki Stamp is a cardiothoracic surgeon who supports women in surgery and women's heart health.
Looking back on 2015, I cannot help but think it was some sort of rising up for strong women. Whatever their cause or background, women stood up with strong voices and argued for equality.
It's not always fun and it's not always happy endings. It's quite often time away from my own family and friends, from my own bed and my own life. But these lovely or powerful memories shape the next year and many years after that. They make me thankful for what I have, wiser, better and stronger. And always ready to do it all over again.

In the year 2015, when we have 3D printing and have discovered water on Mars, we can't even tidy our own houses enough to ensure that our girls and women have an equal shot at life, careers, health or freedom from violence. And can you imagine if you are another minority on top of this?

It's time we teach our kids equality. Boys may need to learn to use graded assertiveness and listen to everyone's views. Our girls need to know that it is okay to say what they need without apologising and with confidence.

Every time we accept the status quo of poor behavior, we are endorsing it. A strong leader should not only advise of behavior that is appropriate, they should embody it. They should be the person telling us that we don't tolerate bullying or harassment.

There is a serious shortage of women in professions that are traditionally dominated by men. As we get more women into visible positions in male-dominated professions, the future generations will be inspired to dizzying heights, even beyond their predecessors.
