A four-year-old girl has been recommended for an award for her "life saving actions" after she called triple zero to get help to her mother caught in a farming accident.

At 1:30pm on Tuesday afternoon, the child watched on from the family home as her mother was riding a caged utility vehicle (similar to a quad bike, but larger) along a private driveway at Bundook, in northern New South Wales.

The 35-year-old woman inadvertently drove down a steep slope and lost control of the vehicle. The RTV rolled down the hill several times, before coming to a stop 100 metres from the road, NSW Police report, with the woman pinned underneath it by her leg.

The girl saw the crash and went to help her mother, who was several hundred metres from the house, falling and grazing her face as she ran.

"The heroic child then [climbed] down the embankment to her mother before returning back to the residence, some 800 metres, to ring 000 and provide emergency services with life saving information," local police reported.

Emergency services, including a rescue helicopter, were called to the Bakers Creek Road property.

When they first arrived, they believed the girl may have been in the RTV when it rolled, but they now believed the grazing on her face was caused by her falling when she attempted to get to her mother, the Sydney Morning Morning Herald reports.

The rescue team were eventually able to free the woman, who had by that stage been trapped for several hours.

She was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle in a serious but stable condition, having suffered a fracture and several serious cuts.

The young girl is now being cared for by relatives while her father returns from interstate.

Police say the girl's bravery and resourcefulness may have saved her mother's life.

"Police believe without the efforts of this young girl the circumstances may have been tragic," the police said.

"Officers from Manning Great Lakes Local Area Command will formally acknowledge the child's quick thinking and life saving actions."

After being freed from the RTV, the woman was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newscastle by ambulance helicopter.
