A man has died in a freak accident after he hit a feral pig while riding his motorcycle in rural NSW.

The 57-year-old man collided with a large black pig while riding his motorbike on a road at Coolah, about 100 kilometers north of Mudgee, about 8.20pm Friday, police said.

Police believe the collision occurred when the wild pig ran out in front of the motorcyclist and caused him to be thrown over the bike's handlebars.

The rider sustained critical head injuries and died a short time later at Coolah Hospital, police said.

The pig was killed on impact.

The man's partner was riding her motorcycle about 40 meters behind at the time and was not injured, police said.
