RSPCA Investigating After Puppy Pictured Strapped To Roof Of Car On Queensland's Bruce Highway

A witness said that the four-wheel-drive travelled with the dog for "well over an hour and a half".

Investigations are underway after a puppy was spotted locked in a cage strapped to the top of a four-wheel-drive on a Queensland highway.

In a Facebook post Margie Popovic said that she witnessed the three to four-month-old "taking the full force of the wind" as the car travelled for "well over an hour and a half" between Gin Gin and Maryborough, 255 kilometres north of Brisbane.

"The car was southbound so no idea how long the dog would have suffered," she wrote.

"This can not be legal ... we will see what the RSPCA will do about it."

Popovic claimed the car was travelling more than 100km/h into heavy wind during the journey.

A spokesman for the RSPCA told HuffPost Australia that inspectors were investigating the matter. The organisation has asked anyone with first-hand information to contact their 24/7 animal emergency line on 1300 264 625.

Pet owners and others in charge of transporting an animal have a duty under Queensland Animal Care and Protection laws to maintain an animal's welfare before, during and after transport.

Failure to ensure that your dog is comfortable, safe and secure while travelling can result in fines of up to $35,340 or one year in jail.
