"When I talk about inclusivity it's not excluding gay characters, it's about inclusivity, so of course," Abrams said when asked whether upcoming films might include a gay character at the U.S.-Ireland Alliance Oscar Wilde Awards on Thursday, according to Vulture. "To me the fun of 'Star Wars' is exploring the possibilities, so it seems insanely narrow minded to say that there wouldn't be a homosexual character in that world."
While Abrams, who directed "The Force Awakens" and will remain an executive producer on future installments that Rian Johnson and Colin Trevorrow direct, wasn't speaking to a Finn-Poe romance (or any love story) specifically, his words do at least leave the door open. And Johnson, who is directing the next film in the series, seemed open to -- or at least entertained by -- the idea when he shared this illustration on Twitter in January:
While the rebooted franchise is no doubt making positive strides for inclusivity in the "Star Wars" universe, only time will tell if a Rey-Finn-Poe love triangle really is in the cards.
