Stormzy has called for Tory MP Jacob Rees-Mogg to resign following his recent comments about the Grenfell Tower tragedy.
The chart-topping rapper fired off a string of tweets on Tuesday, responding to Rees-Moggâs interview on LBC in which he suggested those who died in the 2017 disaster lacked âcommon senseâ for following the London Fire Brigadeâs âstay putâ policy.
In Mondayâs LBC interview, Rees-Mogg told presenter Nick Ferrari: âI think if either of us were in a fire, whatever the fire brigade said, we would leave the burning building. It just seems the common sense thing to do. And it is such a tragedy that that didnât happen.â
The MP later issued a statement saying: âI profoundly apologise.
âWhat I meant to say is that I would have also listened to the fire brigadeâs advice to stay and wait at the time. However, with what we know now and with hindsight I wouldnât and I donât think anyone else would.
âWhatâs so sad is that the advice given overrides common sense because everybody would want to leave a burning building.
âI would hate to upset the people of Grenfell if I was unclear in my comments. With hindsight and after reading the report no one would follow that advice. Thatâs the great tragedy.â
Shortly after Rees-Moggâs apology, an appalled Stormzy shared a link to the interview, branding the politician a âpiece of shitâ and an âalienâ.
âOi @Jacob_Rees_Mogg you need to resign youâre an actual piece of shit,â he wrote. âI canât believe the cheek fucking hell these politicians are actual aliens.
âMy man said âif either of us were in fire, whatever the fire brigade said, weâd leave a burning buildingâ as if to say âcome on bro, they were just dumbâ as if those who lost their lives werenât smart enough to escape. Fucking hell this man is the scummiest.
âYou canât even make this stuff up. Donny said âIf you JUST ignore what youâre told and leave you are so much saferâ BRUV!!!!! Letâs bare in mind for 2 secs how horrifying and terrifying the situation would of been for the victims. And then imagine theyâre being instructed by fire fighters - trusted government authorities - to stay put.â
âThis scumbag is saying âwell boy you lot are dumb to of listened thenâ can you imagine?â
The grime star went on to accuse âevilâ politicians of using the London fire brigade as a scapegoat, insisting: âThe government are to blame for grenfell not the fire brigade. Point blank.
âI donât know the ins and outs and Iâm sure the fire fighters made some errors, to what extent I donât know but nah we ainât gonna act like the brave men and women who went in there are the main reason⌠this happened get the fuck out of here Lmao we ainât that dumb lads
âThis is blood on the British governments hands. Grenfell was their fault and their fault alone.â?!!!! Oi get this prick out of here these man are scumbags and they are wicked and evil.â
Throughout his time in the spotlight, Stormzy has repeatedly used his platform to speak about political issues, with Grenfell being a cause particularly close to his heart.
As well as appearing on a charity single to help those affected by the tragedy, Stormzy also closed the show at the Brit Awards in 2018 with a freestyle rap lambasting then-prime minister Theresa May over the way she handled the incident.
His 2019 hit Vossi Bop also contains the line âfuck the government and fuck Borisâ, which he urged the crowd to join in with him on when he performed it during his headlining slot at Glastonbury over the summer.
