This Group Wants To Prove That Real Men Do Yoga

Guys of Sydney and Melbourne, get ready to yoga.

Admit it, you think yoga is kind of a girly thing to do.

Well, maybe not you specifically, but that's sort of the general consensus. Which is stupid. It's 2017 and guys can still be seen as masculine for doing yoga, just like it's finally girls cool for girls to play basketball (go, the Opals!)

There's a bunch of guys setting out to do just that -- make yoga for men mainstream. The Boys Of Yoga are bringing their roadshow, Block Party, to Melbourne and Sydney following success in New Zealand last year.

Created in 2015 by yogi Michael James Wong, who was originally from Los Angeles and is now based in London, the aim is to let guys to know that doing yoga doesn't make them any less of a man, it makes them a better one.

"What started as a casual conversation about how guys are seen as the secondary citizens in the yoga scene, has turned into a global movement to challenge the way we view yoga in the Western world today," Ben Gould, Co-Founder of Bondi Yoga House told The Huffington Post Australia. Bondi Yoga House is involved in teaching at the Sydney event.

"We couldn't be more excited to be representing an international movement which sends such an important message to the male population in this country. Boys of Yoga is supported by an incredibly talented and passionate brotherhood of guys who are redefining the meaning of yoga," Gould said.

The Australian events kick off in Sydney on the 23rd of February in Lavender Bay, followed by the 2nd of March in Port Melbourne, Victoria. As for what to expect, they won't be like your average yoga classes.

"Think yoga meets ol skool beats and tasty eats," Gould said.

"It is a three hour experience and it will kick-off with a rockin' yoga class by Michael James Wong, as well as local and international yoga teachers Adam Whiting, Dustin Brown and Duncan Parivarian. There will be a curated playlist by international DJ Christian Ralston."

Gould and the crew are excited about challenging the current stereotype and proving yoga is for everyone.

"The launch of the Block Party roadshow in Australia aims to smash the stereotypes and misconceptions of guys who yoga. They are the uncelebrated minority, a crew that believes in the strength and flexibility that yoga offers both on and off the mat. A belief that yoga, much like surf, skate and snow sport cultures, creates a community of the like-minded, the deeper you go, the more it pulls you in. Once men move past the stereotype or ego, they realise yoga is good for everyone, the benefits are undeniable," Gould said.
