'Thor: Ragnarok' Smashes Trailer Record For Disney And Marvel

Get ready to Ragna-rok and roll.

The long-haired Avenger is used to smashing bad guys in the face with his mighty hammer, but now the god of thunder has also broken a record.

On Monday the first trailer for "Thor: Ragnarok", the third standalone Thor film in the Marvel cinematic universe, hit the web and fans lost their minds at the radically different approach to the hero. Under direction from Taika Waititi, the hyper-colourful teaser raked up more than 136 million views in 24 hours.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, this record beats Disney's other properties like "Beauty and the Beast" with just over 127 million views, and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" with 112 million. Meanwhile, the Marvel record for views was previously held by "Captain America: Civil War" with 94 million.

The film sees the return of Chris Hemsworth who faces off with a new foe, Hela, played by Cate Blanchett. Hela imprisons Thor on foreign planet without his trusty hammer, there he is forced to try to win his freedom in time to stop Hela and prevent Ragnarök, the fall of the Asgardian civilization. Hemsworth and Blanchett are joined by Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Anthony Hopkins and even Mark Ruffalo's Hulk makes a gigantic appearance.

Waititi is the director of films like "Boy", "What We Do In The Shadows" and "Hunt for the Wilderpeople", and even though he moved into the major studio machinery of Marvel and Disney, it hasn't stopped him from letting his signature sense of humour leak into the film's creation.

Thanks a lot dude. @chrishemsworth

The director is not new to record breaking, with his 2016 film "Hunt for the Wilderpeople" becoming the highest-grossing local film at the New Zealand box office. That might explain the cheeky Easter egg hidden in the "Ragnarok" trailer.

"Thor: Ragnarok" is scheduled to arrive in cinemas November 3.
