The Australian women’s cricket team have salvaged some Aussie sporting pride after winning the Women's Ashes this morning
The Southern Stars claimed the series with a match to spare, beating England by 20 runs in the thrilling second game of their Twenty20 series.
After their men's team humiliated Australia in the men's Ashes series, the English women's side would have been confident of completing a similar rout -- but the Southern Stars thankfully helped regain some credibility for the Down Under side.
Following their dominant performances over the past six weeks in three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and a Test match, the Southern Stars needed just one win from the three T20 Internationals to take home the prestigious Ashes trophy. The Aussies posted just 107 runs, a target England would have felt confident in chasing down; but it was not to be, as Australia's bowlers ripped through England's batting order to roll them for just 87 runs.
Social media has exploded in support of the Southern Stars, who last won the Ashes in 2013. Federal Minister for Health and Sport, Sussan Ley, was one of the first to extend congratulations.
Australian fast bowling star Mitchell Starc, whose girlfriend Alyssa Healy is the Southern Stars' wicketkeeper, also marked the win.
The English (grudgingly) conceded defeat and offered congratulations, while the Southern Stars themselves -- representatives of a cricketing nation starved of success lately -- also trumpeted the triumph.
Sadly, Cricket Australia seemed to have slept through the game, with no update or congratulations on the main cricketing social media accounts.
England cricketer Danielle Wyatt congratulated the Australian Team.
The girls also showed off their cheeky side during an interview with the Age’s Jesse Hogan.
They also took a gentle dig at the relatively low level of publicity for their Ashes campaign, asking for Today Show host Karl Stefanovic to ask them on the program.
The final women's Ashes T20 will be broadcast on Gem at 9.00pm on Monday.
