The "disgusting" sound it made was audible from long-on, but despite bearing the brunt of a ball to the nose, Adam Zampa said he knew straight away that he had run out Peter Nevill.
Yet to be cleared of a possible broken nose, Zampa was nevertheless rapt to have pulled off one of the most bizarre dismissals in recent cricket history, as his Melbourne Stars took out the derby against the Melbourne Renegades by eight wickets on Saturday night.
The leg-spinner was left the worse for wear after Renegades batsman Dwayne Bravo's straight-drive off Zampa's bowling deflected off non-striker Peter Nevill, before ramming into Zampa's nose, and then onto the stumps. But notwithstanding the pain, there was good news for Zampa. Nevill was comfortably outside his crease.
