Two Australian citizens have reportedly been kidnapped in Burkina Faso, in West Africa.

The pair, a doctor and his wife, are believed to have lived in the area since 1972, working as volunteers.

It's unclear whether the kidnapping was linked to an attack by al-Qaeda fighters on a hotel in the nation's capital. At least 23 people were killed in that attack.
