A man has been shot and killed after allegedly entering Quakers Hill police station, in Sydney's west, armed with a knife.
UPDATE 1pm: Police have said they have "no idea" of the motive of the man, but say the incident was not related to terrorism.
"At 10.40 this morning, a man we believed to be in his 40s came to the Quakers Hill police station. There was a confrontation in the foyer of the station with a Sergeant of 24 years experience. There was a shot fired by the Sergeant that struck the man," a police spokesman told media on Tuesday afternoon.
"He was rendered assistance but passed away a short time later."

"At this stage, we have been unable to identify the man. We have no idea of the motive from coming to the police station. I can say that a large knife has been located at the scene and obviously that will be part of the investigation and the crime."
"There is no indication that this is terrorist-related but why the man came there and why the confrontation occurred, at this stage we just don't know."
UPDATE 12pm: A man has died "during a confrontation with police" at Quakers Hill police station.
In a media statement, NSW Police confirmed the man's death following "a confrontation during which a police firearm was discharged. The man later died."
"A critical incident team from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident."
The statement said no police officers had been injured in the incident, and that a brief was being prepared for the coroner.
EARLIER: NSW Police announced the operation around 10.50am on Tuesday, with a police spokeswoman telling The Huffington Post Australia the incident had occurred around 10.30am.
The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting a man was shot in the shoulder after walking into the station armed with a knife, and later died at the scene.
The police spokeswoman said no information around a possible shooting was available, but that the police's media team were "on the phone finding out if we can say more".
The spokeswoman said she was unable to confirm reports of the man's condition, but at 11.45am said an official police statement on the incident would be coming "soon."
Quakers Hill police station is located on Lalor Road, opposite a pre-school and just one kilometre from a high school.
A spokesman for NSW Ambulance confirmed ambulance staff had been tasked to Lalor Road at Quakers Hill, but referred further enquiries to NSW Police.
Buses are diverting around the area.
