An earthquake, with a strong 7.1 magnitude reading has struck at Valparaiso, off the central coast of Chile.
Initially, the quake was assessed as a magnitude 6.6, and then 6.8, before being upgraded to 7.1.
Reuters reports tremors were felt in the Chilean capital, Santiago. While a quake of this size can cause serious damage, it occurred offshore, potentially reducing its impact.
