AFL Gives Huge 'Yes' To Marriage Equality With New Sign Outside Headquarters

The AFL has given perhaps the biggest endorsement for marriage equality of any sporting organisation, switching the logo outside its main headquarters in Melbourne to a big YES sign.

As HuffPost Australia reported this week, many major sporting codes including rugby league, rugby union, basketball, soccer, cricket and netball have all thrown their support behind the push for same-sex marriage. The Australian Football League had been among the first major organisations to back the reform, with chief executive Gillon McLachlan revealing the AFL's stance on the issue as early as 2014.

While other sporting codes had changed their social media banners to feature rainbow colours or released supportive statements in recent weeks, the AFL has now enacted the most tangible real-world change and emblazoned their support for marriage equality across their very headquarters.

The league's logo, which usually features a red football encircling the 'AFL' acronym, has been changed to feature the word YES instead outside its Docklands HQ.

"The AFL is committed to equality & diversity, & we support the rights of all Australians to live, work & play free from discrimination," the league said on social media.

"The AFL will keep saying no matter how many times it takes, that our game does not tolerate discrimination in any form, be that sexual identity, gender, race (or) religious views ... we also support the position of marriage equality for all people," McLachlan wrote in a letter in 2014.
