America Ferrera Posts Tearful Message On Post-Election Grief

"We deserve to mourn."

America Ferrera has an emotional message for those grieving the election results: you’re not alone, it’s OK to cry.

Donald Trump’s victory on Tuesday night shocked many, particularly considering pollsters nearly unanimously given Clinton the win.

The actress had been a fervent supporter of Hillary Clinton throughout the campaign, speaking at the Democratic convention and canvassing for the nominee relentlessly up to Election Day. And on Wednesday night, Ferrerea shared a teary-eyed photo on Instagram in solidarity with those mourning Clinton’s loss.

“The grief comes in waves,” Ferrera wrote in the photo’s caption. “As if someone I loved died. I’ve never felt this brand of sadness before. If you cried all day ― you are not alone. We deserve to mourn. Patiently waiting for the sadness to transform into something more useful.”

Ferrera was not only a dedicated Clinton surrogate but had consistently denounced Trump’s hateful rhetoric towards Latinos and immigrants throughout his campaign.

“The truth is, Mr. Trump, that your comments mean that you fail to see that immigrants are what have made this nation,” Ferrera wrote in a viral July 2015 blog. “They are at the core of our ideals, and they are the foundation that keeps us afloat. No, Mr. Trump, you may not reduce us to drug dealers and rapists. We are moms and dads, sons and daughters. We are valedictorians and honor students. We are college graduates, bankers, police officers, entertainers, teachers, journalists, politicians and we are the future of America.”

Keep your chin up, America.
